Russian early 20thC multi-mvt sonata forms

I've got a student working on Sergei Vasilenko's viola sonata, looking at how the whole sonata (often understood as being in several movements) can be seen in terms of a single overarching sonata form.  This reminded me of the Koussevitzky(or?) bass concerto, which can be seen the same way, and that got me wondering -- is that a coincidence, or was that a common approach for Russian composers in the early 20thC?  Any tips to pieces or literature much appreciated!  Thanks, John
