For decades I have been telling my students that Schönberg perfectly described the tonal/dramatic function of the transition in a sonata-allegro recapitulation as "modulating from the tonic to the tonic".
Today, I went looking for this quote, and coudn't find it anywhere: not in Fundamentals of Music Composition, and not in an online search.
Does anyone recognize the quip or its source? Did I dream it?
