Hello SMT-Discuss! I am posting the following question on behalf of Joe Straus at the CUNY Graduate Center.
"How many people on average graduate with a Ph.D. in music theory each year in the US and Canada? Does anyone have some reliable statistics, or at least a good guess?"
Thanks for responding.

Accoridng to the NASM HEADS report, which excludes at least the Canadian institutions, all of the Ivies, and the University of Chicago (none of whom are NASM members)—there have been 20 to 25 PhD graduates in each of the last three years. I didn't dig back further. Adding the excluded institutions back in, I would guess the total figure would be closer to 40. Whether that counts as a "good guess" I can't say!
Too many for the jobs available. Not enough for the jobs that should be available.
